IMX290 Low-Light Camera: What Should You Check Before Building?

IMX290 low-light camera module with ribbon cable

Chinneo |

A camera described as “low-light” still needs a realistic lighting plan. Chinneo's IMX290 camera module is currently listed for low-light projects and for video up to 1080p at 60 fps. Those figures describe the listing, not a frame-rate or night-vision result that Chinneo has independently measured on your host.

Define the scene before choosing a camera

How dark is the scene? Is the subject still or moving? Do you need to identify fine detail or merely detect presence? A longer exposure may brighten a static scene but blur a moving subject. A wider lens may cover more of the room while making the target smaller in each frame. These tradeoffs matter more than a “night vision” label by itself. Sony's IMX290-related sensor material discusses the sensor family's low-illumination design; it does not certify the behavior of this complete third-party module.

For a dark enclosure or room, decide whether visible lighting or a suitable infrared-lighting arrangement will be available. A sensitive sensor is not a light source. Do not assume IR LEDs, a removable IR filter, or a particular lens is included unless the exact selected package confirms it.

Check integration before expecting a picture

The current IMX290 product has one listed configuration. Before ordering, confirm the camera-side connector, the host-side cable, module dimensions, and support in the operating system or camera stack you intend to use. A product photograph showing a Raspberry Pi or a ribbon cable does not establish compatibility with every board or prove all pictured accessories are included.

Create a simple acceptance scene for your project: the actual subject at the planned distance, under the planned lighting, while moving at the expected speed. Ask whether the required detail is visible, whether exposure causes blur, and whether the host can capture the mode you need. This is a proposed test plan, not a claim that we have run it.

Bottom line: The IMX290 listing is a starting point for a low-light design, not a guarantee of usable video in complete darkness. Verify lighting and the exact integration path before purchase.
