OV5647 IR-CUT with a 16mm CS Lens: Is This the Right Package?

OV5647 IR-CUT camera module with 16mm CS lens

Chinneo |

The current OV5647 IR-CUT product has one listed variant: IR-CUT with 16mm CS lens and 22-pin cable. Unlike a broad “camera module” label, this option names both a lens focal length and a cable type. Neither detail alone confirms that the package will frame your subject or connect to your board.

Start with the working distance

A 16mm lens name is not a universal angle-of-view promise. Field of view depends on sensor dimensions, lens design, and the distance from camera to subject. At a given sensor size, a longer focal length generally narrows the view; Edmund Optics' lens guide explains the relationship. Measure the width of the scene you need to capture and the position where the camera can be mounted. Then confirm the resulting view with the actual lens-and-sensor combination rather than inferring it from “16mm.”

Check the 22-pin connection and day/night plan

The variant names a 22-pin cable, but you still need to confirm which end attaches to the camera and which host connector it fits. Raspberry Pi's camera documentation distinguishes the 15-pin connectors used on Pi 4 from the smaller 22-pin connectors on Pi 5 and Pi Zero. A physical fit is not a software-support guarantee.

The IR-CUT wording also does not by itself promise usable images in darkness. If the project requires night imaging, determine how the filter is switched and what infrared or visible lighting will illuminate the scene. Gallery images of separate IR illuminator boards must not be treated as included accessories without package evidence. Raspberry Pi's NoIR explanation is a reminder that admitting infrared and supplying infrared light are different functions.

Bottom line: Confirm scene width, working distance, lens package, cable ends, filter control, and lighting before choosing this specific OV5647 configuration.
